NINETEEN

Wellington, March 1994

‘Are you sure I’m the right person?’

Amanda nodded, innocence firmly displayed on her face.

‘Alright,’ Mrs Ferris sighed. ‘Though I don’t understand why your teacher thought this was a good idea.’

It hadn’t taken much nudging to get her teacher to agree that Mrs Ferris was the perfect example of a highly skilled worker and an ideal choice for a project on the modern workforce. Most of her class were interviewing firefighters or police officers. Amanda’s recent experience with the police had been enough for her and she didn’t want to spend any more time with them. Besides, the project gave her the perfect opportunity to hang out in the office … where the student records were kept.

‘I wanted to do something different from the rest of my class, and the other day when I was here I thought that you seemed like you knew everything that went on at the school and that’s so amazing when there’s so many students.’

Amanda heard Alice’s voice in her head telling her she was babbling. She clamped her mouth shut and smiled.

‘Well, thank you, Amanda. Sometimes I think no one realises that.’ Mrs Ferris was typing on the computer as she spoke. ‘My job is so much more than answering phones—’

The phone rang.

‘Roseneath Primary School, Mrs Ferris speaking. Yes, that’s fine, Mr Rogers, I’ll let her teacher know.’

She hung up the phone and scribbled something on a piece of paper.

‘Answering the phones is an important part of it too, of course, but there is so much more than that. I take care of deliveries, make payments, ensure the principal gets to her meetings on time.’

‘Wow, sounds busy,’ Amanda said. And boring .

‘It can be quite challenging,’ Mrs Ferris replied.

At that moment a boy burst into the office and excitedly announced that there was a fire in the boys’ toilets.

‘Rubbish!’ Mrs Ferris said. ‘What have I told you about telling fibs, Selwyn Johnson?’

Nevertheless, she sprang from her desk and rushed out of the room, followed by the breathless boy.

As soon as they were gone, Amanda ran around the desk to examine Mrs Ferris’ computer. She hoped it was as easy to operate as Mrs Ferris made it look. She wiggled the mouse and the screen came to life. It might as well have been in a different language. Scanning the office she spotted the filing cabinets and quickly opened the one marked A-H. Finding Helen’s file she scanned it as quickly as she could, knowing that the small paper fire she’d suggested Selwyn Johnson ‘would never be brave enough to start’ in the boys’ toilets wouldn’t keep Mrs Ferris distracted for long.

She checked the clock above the door. It’d been two minutes but it felt like twenty. Suddenly the sound of footsteps approached the office door. Amanda quicky closed the cabinet drawer and reached out to pick up the phone receiver, just as the office door opened and Mrs Ferris entered.

‘Amanda, what are you doing?’

Amanda put the phone down. ‘The phone rang and I wasn’t sure what to do, so answered it.
